Fire Extinguisher Signs

To comply with NFPA 10, fire extinguisher signs should be installed in a “conspicuous” location, typically directly above the extinguisher. Secure the sign using industrial-grade adhesive or appropriate mechanical fasteners (unless mounting on a fire-rated door) and position it about 60 to 80 inches from the floor for clear visibility. Proper installation of fire extinguisher labels ensures the equipment can be quickly located during an emergency.

Under NFPA 10 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157, fire extinguisher signs are required when the extinguisher is not “conspicuously located” or its view is obstructed. This includes units inside cabinets, around corners, or in large facilities where equipment may be hidden by shelving or machinery. In such cases, a clearly visible arrow fire extinguisher sign must be mounted above the unit to identify its location from a distance.

Fire extinguisher signs are typically mounted 60 to 80 inches above the floor to ensure maximum visibility. Although NFPA 10 does not specify an exact height, this range is widely accepted because it keeps the fire extinguisher sign visible above desks, partitions, or shelving. Proper placement helps ensure the extinguisher can be quickly located during an emergency.

While there are no strict requirements regarding the use and placement of fire extinguisher signs, OSHA requires that fire extinguishers be “mounted, located, and identified” such that they are readily accessible by employees during an emergency. Signs are one way to identify the fire equipment and qualifies as a recommended safety practice. 

Additionally, while the NFPA also does not mention signage specifically, it does require extinguishers placed inside cabinets to be conspicuously marked. It also requires that extinguishers located in large rooms or places with visual distractions be accompanied by appropriate means to guide people to the equipment location.

A fire extinguisher sign should be installed above a portable fire extinguisher to help people locate the equipment easily. The sign should be installed high enough to be seen from a distance and not be obstructed by objects, opening doors, people, etc. It is often a good idea to install the sign close to the ceiling, right above the extinguisher. This ensures people can read the sign from near, far, and different angles. 

Additionally, placing directional fire extinguisher signs with arrows close to the extinguisher is also a best practice so that people a little away from the equipment can also locate it. The arrows on the sign assist with pointing towards the location of the fire equipment.

The OSHA standard 1910.157 does not explicitly mention anything about fire extinguisher signs other than the requirement for the extinguishers to be identified. However, the NFPA code 10 does make a couple of recommendations with respect to signage. It requires that signs be installed in close proximity of the extinguishers and be readily visible from the normal path of travel.
